The Eternal Gandhi Museum Houston welcomes volunteers who wish to serve the community while helping preserve and share the life, legacy, and values of Mahatma Gandhi. Volunteers are essential and contribute to the museum’s mission by supporting education, visitor engagement, programs, and daily operations in a spirit of service and respect.

Who Can Volunteer

Volunteer opportunities are open to adults and seniors, college and university students, and community members interested in education, history, and civic values. Volunteers should be dependable, respectful, and committed to the museum’s mission and guidelines. Minimum age to volunteer is 18 years.

Visitor Services 

Welcoming visitors, assisting with check-in, and helping ensure a positive museum experience. 

Docents & Educational Support 

Assisting with guided tours, school field trips, and educational programs. Training is provided. 

Programs & Events Support 

Supporting lectures, community programs, youth engagement activities, and special events. 

Administrative & Operational Support 

Assisting with office tasks, coordination, research, and behind-the-scenes support as needed. 

How to Become a Volunteer

Individuals interested in volunteering are invited to complete the Volunteer Application Form. Applications are reviewed by museum staff, and selected volunteers will be contacted regarding next steps, including orientation and training. We aim to respond to all applications within 1-2 weeks.

Training & Orientation

All volunteers receive orientation to the museum and its mission, role-specific training, and ongoing guidance and support from museum staff. 

Time Commitment

Volunteer schedules are flexible and may include regular weekly or monthly shifts, or periodic and event-based support. Specific commitments are discussed during the application process.

  • Volunteer hours tracking — all service hours are logged and documented, providing a verifiable record for academic credit, community service requirements, or professional references
  • Letters of recommendation — available upon request for students and volunteers who have completed a minimum number of service hours
  • Volunteer appreciation events — EGMH hosts periodic gatherings to celebrate and thank its volunteer community
  • Deepened involvement — dedicated volunteers may be invited to take on expanded roles, lead programs, or serve in a more formal museum capacity over time
