History of the Museum
The Eternal Gandhi Museum Houston (EGMH) was established to preserve and share the life, legacy, and teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, and to promote the universal values of truth, nonviolence, peace, love, and service.
The museum’s history reflects a collective vision shaped by founders, trustees, volunteers, donors, and educators who recognized the enduring relevance of Gandhian principles in the United States and beyond.
Founding Vision
The idea for the Eternal Gandhi Museum Houston emerged in 2016, when a group of community leaders envisioned a permanent institution in the United States dedicated exclusively to Mahatma Gandhi and his philosophy of nonviolence.

Formation of the Organization
The Eternal Gandhi Museum Houston was formally established as a nonprofit organization in 2017 with the formation of a governing Board of Trustees and an organizational framework to guide its mission and operations.
Key milestones during this phase included legal incorporation as a nonprofit entity; establishment of governance and bylaws; early fundraising and community outreach; and development of the museum’s educational and interpretive framework.
Development & Planning Phase
During the planning and development phase (2019-2023) the museum focused on identifying and securing a permanent location; designing exhibits and interpretive experiences; building partnerships with educators and scholars; and engaging donors, volunteers, and community partners.
Museum Opening
The Eternal Gandhi Museum Houston officially opened to the public on [October 2, 2023, welcoming visitors from across the Houston region and beyond.
Early programming included guided museum tours, school and educational visits, public lectures, community dialogues, and special commemorative events.
Growth & Expansion
Since its opening (2023–Present), the museum has continued to grow through the expansion of permanent and rotating exhibits; development of curriculum-aligned education programs; youth engagement and leadership initiatives; lectures, talks, and community programs; and the introduction of digital guides and virtual experiences.

Community & Educational Impact
Education remains central to the museum’s mission. Through partnerships with schools, educators, and community organizations, the museum has served students and educators annually and welcomed visitors from diverse cultural, religious, and generational backgrounds.
