The Eternal Gandhi Museum Houston (EGMH) is creating a world-class cultural and educational museum dedicated to preserving and promoting Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy of nonviolent conflict resolution by cultivating universal values of Truth, Nonviolence, Peace, Love, and Service.

When it opens in the Summer of 2023, it will be the only museum in the Americas dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi. The museum will highlight the essence of Gandhi’s teachings and ways of life, from the design of the building to the visitor experience and educational programming.

The Museum’s second gallery will focus on Gandhi’s early years. As a child, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was shy but mischievous. He would run home after school to avoid interacting with other children. When prodded by his teacher to correct a spelling error on a test, he refused as Gandhi thought this was considered cheating.

EGMH is an interactive museum allowing visitors to learn about Gandhi’s formative years. A unique interactive station of three objects significant to Gandhi’s youth stands before a sculpture of young Gandhi. When a visitor touches one of the objects, a video is activated, displaying on the screen behind the statue illustrating young Gandhi’s character. Object 1, labeled “Honesty & Forgiveness” will display the emotional story of his confession to his father for stealing. Object 2, labeled “Truthfulness,” shows values he learned from Raja Harishchandra, King of Ayodhya. Object 3, labeled “Overcoming Fear,” shows how he overcomes his fears through chanting and meditation.

The total budget for EGMH is $10 million, of which we have raised $7.3 million.
