Houston, TX \u2013 September 9, 2024<\/strong> \u2013 The Eternal Gandhi Museum Houston is thrilled to announce a\u00a0<\/i>special visit by cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar on September 9th, 2024. The iconic Indian cricketer\u00a0<\/i>and global sports ambassador toured the museum with museum staE and trustees.<\/i><\/p>

Gavaskar, renowned for his outstanding contributions to cricket and his role as a cultural\u00a0<\/i>ambassador, engaged with museum patrons, sharing his insights on how Gandhi’s principles have\u00a0<\/i>influenced his career and personal life. This visit marks a unique opportunity to bridge the worlds of\u00a0<\/i>cricket and social change, reflecting on the values of perseverance, integrity, and unity that both\u00a0<\/i>Gandhi and Gavaskar embody.<\/i><\/p>

During his visit, Gavaskar explored the museum’s exhibits, which celebrate Gandhi’s philosophy of\u00a0<\/i>non-violence, truth, and justice. He also participated in a oderated interview, where he reflected\u00a0<\/i>on Gandhi\u2019s impact on sports and leadership, and his own experiences in the world of cricket.<\/i><\/p>

What are your initial impressions of the Gandhi Museum and its exhibits?<\/i><\/strong><\/p>

The initial impression is that of how inviting the museum is. A lot of times, when you are around a\u00a0<\/i>museum, you are not very sure if you want to go in or not. With the Gandhi Museum, I think the\u00a0<\/i>whole atmosphere around it is such that you want to go in and I want to know more about Gandhi.<\/i><\/p>

How does Gandhi’s philosophy of non-violence resonate with you personally?<\/i><\/strong><\/p>

Enormously. This is the way India got its independence through nonviolent means. I do think this\u00a0<\/i>message of settling conflicts non-violently should be back in our daily lives not just for the Indians,\u00a0<\/i>but for the entire world.<\/i><\/p>

Can you share a moment or an aspect of Gandhi\u2019s life that particularly inspires you or aligns\u00a0<\/i>with your own values?<\/i><\/strong><\/p>

I think the time when he was thrown out of the train in South Africa and the way he stood back to\u00a0<\/i>reorganize his life to be able to ensure that another injustice like that wouldn\u2019t happen again.<\/i><\/p>

Are there any specific initiatives or projects you are involved in that align with Gandhi\u2019s ideals?<\/i><\/strong><\/p>

Well, I am heavily involved in the Heart-to-Heart Foundation which arranges totally free-of-cost\u00a0<\/i>surgery for children with congenital heart defects in India. We are trying to create awareness which\u00a0<\/i>is a profoundly significant issue of modern times. Around 300k children are born every year with this\u00a0<\/i>defect.<\/i><\/p>

What is one key takeaway from your visit that you believe will stay with you?<\/i><\/strong><\/p>

I think it is the fact that if you are true to yourself, you will be true to the rest of the world, and true to\u00a0<\/i>everyone else around you and this will spread to the rest of the world.<\/i><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Houston, but originally the Southern part of India. We moved here from Hyderabad in 1976.<\/p>

I like volunteering at this museum as I have been waiting so long for the project to be completed.<\/p>

I like to meet new people and answer all their questions.<\/p>
