Eternal Gandhi Museum

Eternal Gandhi Multimedia Museum in New Delhi, an initiative of the Aditya Birla Group in India, has made a gracious offer to the Mahatma Gandhi Library of Houston to donate Gandhi Exhibits to the new Eternal Gandhi Museum in Houston. The Eternal Gandhi Museum team, India, will oversee the installation of the Exhibits at the Houston Museum, slated to open 2019.

The Eternal Gandhi Multimedia Museum opened in New Delhi in 2005, and is one of the world’s first digital multimedia museums. Houston would be the first and only city in the United States to host it as a permanent exhibit. The Houston Museum would be a phenomenal educational resource for the community, especially for children, and will present Gandhian values in a fun and game-centric manner.

The museum will present the historical events of Gandhi’s life as well as spectrum of information technology, inspired by Gandhian thought. To take a virtual tour that highlights the Gandhi exhibits that will be on display at the Houston Museum.

The plan is to build a world class museum of about 10,000 square feet to house the Eternal Gandhi multimedia exhibits over the next two years in Houston. Mahatma Gandhi Library has recently acquired land at a prime location to house this Museum. Our goal is to raise $8.5 million of which $5.0 million will go towards land acquisition and building for the museum. The remaining $3.0 million will go into a corpus fund whose investment earnings will provide for operating expenses. The Aditya Birla Group has graciously donated the Gandhi Exhibits valued at $500K. The museum is expected to be open in 2019.

The Board of Trustees of Mahatma Gandhi Library has already committed $1.1 million for the project, raised a total of $1.4 million and looks forward to generous donations and support from Grants & Foundations towards successful completion of the Museum. Additionally, contributions and support from the community at large is critical to keep the flame of nonviolence, that Gandhi epitomized, alive!

In addition, to housing the Eternal Gandhi Multimedia Exhibits, the museum will house the exhibition of Indian National Gandhi Museum’s (New Delhi) 100 plus black and white enlarged photographs (depicting the life and times of Gandhi), titled “Gandhi Darshan” (Glimpses of Gandhi). The Museum will also include interactive exhibits of Mahatma Gandhi stamps published by more than 100 countries around the world.

The mission of the Eternal Gandhi Museum is to provide the community of Houston and surrounding areas, especially the youth, a place to learn about Mahatma Gandhi and core values of Peace, Truth, Non-Violence, Love and Service. These are eternal values for the wellbeing of the society. Visitors should be inspired to reflect on how they can apply these principles in their own everyday lives. It is our mission to take these values to the next generation through the studies of leaders of peace such as Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, Nelson Mandela and similar apostles of peace. In today’s deeply complex world, extreme violence has become an everyday occurrence. There is a definite need to share and disseminate the Gandhian principles of nonviolence, communal harmony, simple living and adherence to truth. The Eternal Gandhi Museum will reinforce the life and teachings of Mahatma Gandhi in a fun, game centric way and a clearly understandable medium to people of all ages and backgrounds and generations to follow.

It will be one of a kind addition to Houston City’s landscape. In due course, it is expected to become a tourist destination for the City of Houston and the Americas.
