eternal gandhi museum houston opening
The Eternal Gandhi Museum Houston (EGMH) is creating a world-class cultural and educational museum dedicated to preserving and promoting Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy of nonviolent conflict resolution by cultivating universal values of Truth, Nonviolence, Peace, Love, and Service.
When it opens in the Summer of 2023, it will be the only museum in the Americas dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi. The museum will highlight the essence of Gandhi’s teachings and ways of life, from the design of the building to the visitor experience and educational programming.
Upon graduating high school, young Gandhi traveled to London to study law. There he played the English Gentleman to fit into society. Theosophist brothers introduced him to The Song Celestial, a translation of the Bhagavad Gita. The Bhagavad Gita initiated his enthusiasm to learn more about religion. He had taken three vows to secure his mother’s consent to go to London: not touching wine, women, and meat. Studying in London was expensive, so to minimize his expenses, he experimented with dietetics. Gandhi would reduce the debt his family was incurring in India to finance his London stay by simplifying his life and walking wherever he could. As described in his autobiography, he says, “My shyness has been in reality my shield and buckler. It has allowed me to grow … taught me the economy of words. This shyness I retained throughout my stay in England.”
The total budget for EGMH is $10 million, of which we have raised $7.3 million.
